Combined loading of RC pile groups in clay accounting for N–M interaction

Motivated by the need for retrofit of existing bridges, this paper explores nonlinear response pile groups in clay under combined loading. The problem is analysed numerically, employing a kinematic hardening model soil, and Concrete Damaged Plasticity (CDP) reinforced concrete (RC) piles. Using reference 2 × 1 group, it shown that three resistance mechanisms are mobilized: axial loading (Max), bending (Mb), pilecap (Mcap). While current design practice typically considers only first mechanism, allowing strongly soil full mobilization all may lead to significant increase group moment capacity. analysis also reveals account force–bending (N?M) interaction RC piles, which feasible through CDP model. Especially groups, more realistic estimation ultimate capacity facilitate development rational strategies. A parametric study subsequently conducted, exploring effect safety factor against vertical (FSv), shear (M/H) ratio, interface modelling, contribution. results generalized analysing complex 3 4 typologies deriving 3D failure envelopes V – H M space. Thanks contribution pilecap, decrease FSv leads an expansion envelope, can be relevance assessment after bridge widening. Finally, diagrams normalized, leading unique non-dimensional envelope examined typologies.
